Chapter 75அதிகாரம் 75 செவிமடுத்தல் Listening

Receiving another's words.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 741.

    A refusal that listened

    கேளா மறுப்பவன் கேட்டது தன்சொல்லேகேட்டு மறுப்பவன் கேள்

kelaa maruppavan kettadhu thansollekettu maruppavan kel

A man who refuses without listening has heard nothing but his own words; the man who listens and then refuses is one of your own: listen to him.

The Tamil word kel means both ‘listen!’ and ‘kin, one of your own’; the line closes on both.

  2. 742.

    Relief in being heard

    முள்மேல் நடந்தவன் கால்கழுவும் நீர்போலாம்உள்ளம் கழுவும் செவி

mulmel nadandavan kaalkazhuvum neerpolaamullam kazhuvum sevi

The ear washes the heart as water washes the feet of one who has walked on thorns.

  3. 743.

    Too tired to listen

    சலித்த மனத்தால் செவிமடுத்தல் சல்லடையால்நீர்முகத்தல் ஒக்கும் நிலை

salitha manathaal sevimaduthal salladaiyaalneermukathal okkum nilai

Lending an ear with a mind not at rest is like drawing water with a sieve.

  4. 744.

    Hoping to be heard

    கிணற்றில் எறிந்தகல் கேட்குமென்றேன் கேளாமணற்றரை ஆனது நெஞ்சு

kinatril erindakal kedkumendren kelaamanatrarai aanadhu nenju

I said that even a stone thrown into a well would hear itself answered; the heart has become sandy ground that does not hear.

A stone dropped into a well sounds back; sand takes it without a sound. Whose heart has turned to sand, the Tamil leaves open.

  5. 745.

    What went unsaid

    பேசினாள் நூறுசொல் பேசாத ஒன்றினைச்சூழ்ந்ததே கேட்போர் செவி

pesinaal noorusol pesaadha ondrinaissoozhndadhe kedpor sevi

She said a hundred words, and the ears of those who listened circled the one thing she left unsaid.

  6. 746.

    Humble ears know hearts

    பள்ளம் அறியும் புனலின் பணிசெவிஉள்ளம் அறியும் மொழி

pallam ariyum punalin paniseviullam ariyum mozhi

As water knows the low ground, the bowed ear knows the heart’s word.

A bowed ear is one inclined toward the speaker, humble and attentive.

  7. 747.

    Hearing the pauses

    இசைத்ததைக் கேட்பர் இயல்பாய் இசையாஇடைவெளி கேட்பார் சிலர்

isaithadhaik kedpar iyalpaai isaiyaaidaiveli kedpaar silar

People hear what is sounded as a matter of course; a few hear the gap left unsounded.

  8. 748.

    Honesty hears deceit

    கல்லுக்குள் நீரறியும் வேர்போலச் சொல்லுக்குள்பொய்யறிவார் பொய்யா தவர்

kallukkul neerariyum verpolas sollukkulpoyyarivaar poyyaa thavar

A root finds the water within stone; those who do not lie find the lie within words.

  9. 749.

    The need behind praise

    புகழ்வார்சொல் கண்ணாடி அன்றுநின் தோற்றம்அவர்தேவை காட்டும் வடிவு

pukazhvaarsol kannaadi andrunin thotramavarthevai kaattum vadivu

The words of those who praise you are no mirror of your face; what they show is the shape of their own need.

  10. 750.

    Listening lets it out

    மூடிவைத்த பானைக்கும் ஆவியோர் வாய்வேண்டும்கேட்டலே நெஞ்சின் வழி

moodivaitha paanaikkum aaviyor vaayvendumkettale nenjin vazhi

Even a pot kept covered needs one opening for its steam; for the heart, that way is someone who listens.
