Chapter 73அதிகாரம் 73 சுற்றம் Kinship
The wider web of kin.
721. Bonds we never sought
nadpinai yaavarum theduvar sutramothedaa thuruva thuravu
Everyone seeks friendship; kinship is the bond that comes unsought.
722. Neglect destroys kinship
seyyaa thirukkum pozhudhe uravazhiyumseyyavum vendaa pakai
Kinship perishes while one does nothing; there is no need even to do anything hostile.
723. Doing hard things
seyvana seyyaar eninum seyarkariyaseyvar uravinar thaam
Though kin leave undone what they should do, the things that are hard to do, they do.
724. Warmth that remains
veyilmarain thaalum maraiyaak karungaluyirthavep pambol uravu
Kinship is like the warmth a black stone breathes out: the sun goes; it does not.
725. Drawn towards our beginnings
orumadiyil thoongiyavar noorumadi sendrumorumadiyai naadum uravu
Those who slept in one lap, though scattered a hundredfold, still seek that one lap: this is kinship.
In Tamil, madi means both ‘lap’ and ‘-fold’, so ‘one lap’, ‘a hundredfold’ and ‘that one lap’ echo one word.
726. Shared need connects
verpinaiyaa mannul irumaramum neerthediormunaiyil koodum uravu
The roots of two trees are not tied to each other; each reaches for water, and they meet at one place in the earth. That meeting is kinship.
727. A bond can revive
ularnda kalimannum neerthottaal meelumularnda uravum adhu
Dried clay comes back at the touch of water; so does kinship that has dried.
728. Help beyond birth
udanpiravaar seyyum udhaviyum sutramudanpirandaar seyyaa vidin
When those born with you do not help, the help of those not born with you is kinship too.
729. Sharing when there’s little
koozhondre aayinum koodiyun paarthamarminjiyapin eevaar ayal
Those who eat together even when there is only gruel are kin; those who give once something is left over are outsiders.
730. Kinship carries forward
kozhundee koluthum koluthiyadhee matrorkozhundaakum adhe kulam
A blazing flame kindles a fire, and the kindled fire sends up another flame: this is kin.
