Chapter 68அதிகாரம் 68 சலிப்பு Boredom

Unfilled time.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 671.

    Bored amid plenty

niraimazhai yaayinum vaaymoodung kinnamkuraiyan runarvin salippu

In the full rain the cup closes its mouth: this is no lack, but feeling grown weary.

  2. 672.

    Emptiness amplifies

verungoodam kedkum edhiroliyaip polassirusorvu kedkum manam

As an empty hall hears an echo, the mind hears a slight weariness.

  3. 673.

    Different tasks, same boredom

maatrum thozhilthorum maaraa salippudaiyaarootrin uvarppe nilai

Through every changing task their weariness stays unchanged: theirs is the brackishness of the spring itself.

A brackish spring is salty at its source, so every pot drawn from it tastes of salt.

  4. 674.

    Always seeking novelty

pudhiyave thedis salippar pazhaiyapudhidhaaka nokkaa thavar

Only the new they seek, and weary in the seeking, who do not see the old as new.

  5. 675.

    Nothing to finish

madippaan virippaan madippaan avankaimudippadhondrum illaadha naal

He folds, he spreads out, he folds again, on a day when his hand has not one thing to finish.

  6. 676.

    Pleasure wears thin

naadorum minnum maniyai yanivaarkkunaadorum kallaam mani

The gem sparkles every day; to those who wear it every day, the gem is a stone every day.

  7. 677.

    Just passing time

pozhudhupok kennum porulilaa vedkaipozhudhinaip pokkum vinai

The hollow craving we call a pastime does its work: it does away with time.

‘Pastime’ (Tamil pozhuthupokku) literally means ‘sending the time away’.

  8. 678.

    Nothing comes next

paduthavar thoongaar ezhundavar sellaaraduthadhon rillaa nilai

Some have lain down and do not sleep; some have risen and do not go. This is the state in which nothing comes next.

  9. 679.

    Busy without release

seyvadhon rillaa salippandru seyvadhuluyvadhon rillaa salippu

Weariness is not that there is nothing to do; it is that in all we do there is nothing to see us through.

  10. 680.

    Boredom can create

vilaiyaa nilamandru villaas salippuvilaiyum pudhumai nilam

Unbroken boredom is not barren land; it is land where newness grows.
