Chapter 67அதிகாரம் 67 காத்திருப்பு Waiting

The time between wanting and getting.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 661.

    Waiting leaves traces

vaasar padiyin vazhuvazhuppe katruraikkumaasaik kirundaar alavu

The smoothness of the doorstep alone tells the measure of those who sat there wanting.

  2. 662.

    Waiting wears the body

valaiyularthi meenvarunaal paarppaval tholumvalaiyudan kaayum veyil

She spreads her net to dry and watches for the day the fish come; the sun dries her skin with the net.

  3. 663.

    Before it happens

aazhkinatrul veezhndadhandru allal vizhumunnarkkeezhnokkik kanda kanam

The distress is not in having fallen into a deep well; it is in the moment before the fall, when one looked down and saw.

  4. 664.

    Life passes meanwhile

koozhaarak kaathiruppaan koozhinmun vaazhnaalumaarum ariyaa thavan

He who sits before his porridge, waiting for it to cool, does not know that his own life is cooling too.

  5. 665.

    Waiting for words

solvaa rilaamai sudumiruvar nenjilumorsolle kidakkum surundu

It burns, that no one speaks it: in both their hearts lies one and the same word, curled.

  6. 666.

    Waiting while closed

kadhavadaithuk kaathiruppaan thannul adaithakadhavariyaan kaanaan varal

Whoever shuts the door and keeps vigil does not know of the door shut within them, and does not see the arrival.

  7. 667.

    Still between outcomes

kanindadhum illai karukiyadhum illaipanithuli soozhndadhoru kaai

Not ripened, not scorched: a green fruit, ringed with dew.

  8. 668.

    Readiness wears away

koorvel kidakkum pakaiyilaa naalellaamkoormaiye thinnum thuru

Every day a sharp spear lies with no enemy to meet, rust eats its sharpness.

  9. 669.

    Calm can hold unease

kaathirukkum nenjir kalakkamilaa neramumkaathirukkum akkalakkam thaan

For a waiting heart, even the untroubled hour is that very trouble, waiting.

  10. 670.

    Stillness has costs

odum puravikkor kaaltheyum nirkumpuravikkudh theyum uyir

The horse that runs wears down one leg; the horse that stands still wears down its life.
