Chapter 60அதிகாரம் 60 முடிவு Decision
The moment of choosing.
591. Unable to choose
vizhungavum aakaa thumizhavum aakaaazhundiya thondaiyil sol
A word stuck in a tight throat can be neither swallowed nor spat out.
592. What remains unchosen
theendiyadhor naarin olinirkum theendaadhaneenda narambil pala
One string was touched, and its sound holds; in the long strings left untouched lie many sounds.
On stringed instruments, untouched strings hum along with the plucked one. Its sound may linger in them, or they may keep notes never played.
593. Seeing without choosing
irukaraiyum kandaan idaineeril nindraanorukaraiyum seraa udal
He has seen both banks and stands in the water between them; his body does not reach even one bank.
594. Staying can confine
paayndadhoru pulvaanam kollum paravaathirukkum kilaiye sirai
The bird that has leapt takes the sky; for the bird that stays without flying, the very branch it sits on is its prison.
595. Choosing without certainty
kadalil kalathai nadathuvaan kaatrinthidamariyaan thervaan thisai
He who steers a ship at sea does not know the strength of the wind; he judges which way to go.
596. Stopping chooses too
nadakkum vazhiyil irulundu nindraalkidakkum irule vazhi
There is darkness on the path we walk; if we stand still, the darkness itself becomes the path.
At first darkness lies on the path as something in the way; then that same darkness is named the path itself.
597. Reopening settled choices
vidhaithapin mannaip pilandukaan paanpolnilaithadhai yennum kurai
To sow, then split the soil open to look: such is the fault of turning over what has settled.
598. Settling the aim
irukan oruporule nokkum iruporulnokkin irukannum poy
Two eyes look at one thing only; if they look at two things, both eyes are false.
‘False’ as a lying witness: eyes split between two things give a true account of neither. Tamil ‘thing’ also means aim or purpose.
599. Choosing before seeing
kanmoodik kaalvaithaan kaalvaitha pinnarekanthirandu kaanpaan vazhi
He shut his eyes and set his foot down. He opens them only after the foot is down, and sees the way.
600. Weight of forgone options
eduthaal orukal edaadhakal lellaamsumakkum manathin thalai
She lifted one stone; her mind carries on its head every stone she left unlifted.
