Desire to rise; cut away the desire that makes your rising trouble others.
583. Trapped by ambition

enimel maadamunden rerinaan eriyummaadamatra eni sirai
He climbed the ladder, believing a house stood at its top; even at the top, a ladder that leads to no house is a prison.

thoonmel vilakketridh thoonkeezh irulviduvaarkaanaar uyarvin kanakku
Those who light a lamp atop the pillar and leave its foot in darkness do not see the whole measure of height.
The Tamil word for height (uyarvu) also means rising in life.

ezhuvaan idare idamaakkum thoongumidame idaraakum man
Whoever rises makes ground of hardship itself; the very ground one sleeps on becomes hardship.
In Tamil, hardship (idar) and ground (idam) differ by a single sound. Sleeping here means lying idle, not needed rest.
590. Who supports success

padikkalle thaangum padiyeru vaarinadikkallaam ezhaiyin thol
The step-stone itself bears those who climb; the foundation stone beneath it is a poor person’s shoulder.
