Chapter 56அதிகாரம் 56 செல்வம் Wealth

Money and possessions.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 551.

    How wealth is earned

nervazhiyil vandaselvam nenjurangum paayaakumtheevazhiyil vandadhu thee

Wealth that came by the straight road is a mat for the heart to sleep on; wealth that came by a wrong road is fire.

  2. 552.

    Money clouds judgment

oosi nuzhaindaal unarvaai narambinaikkaasu nuzhaindaal kurudu

When a needle enters a nerve, you feel it; when money enters, blindness.

  3. 553.

    Money without friendship

nadpindris serthadhor selvam thirappindrikkattiya veettin irul

Wealth gathered without friendship is the darkness inside a house built without an opening.

  4. 554.

    Possessions take control

udaiyaar udaimaiyai yaalumen rennumudaiyaarai aalum porul

Owners are reckoned to rule what they own; what they own rules the owners.

  5. 555.

    Guarding reveals desire

kaappidum pootte kavarvuraikkum kondadhanaikkaappadhe koorum avaa

The very lock set to guard a thing speaks of grasping; the very guarding of what is held speaks of desire.

The Tamil word for grasping also means allure: the lock points both to a hand that clutches and to a thing worth clutching.

  6. 556.

    Spending drains wealth

kadalalavu serppinum kaavaas selavirkudamalave nirkum kuvai

Though you heap up an ocean’s measure, spend without guard and the heap stands at a potful.

  7. 557.

    Losing money and status

selvam izhandaar izhandadhondru selvarenumsollai izhandaar irandu

Lose wealth, and one thing is lost; lose the word ‘rich’, and two.

‘Rich’ is a name a person carries, counted here as something of its own that can be lost.

  8. 558.

    Want sharpens drive

ellaiyil selvam mazhukkum ezhuschiyaiillaamai theettum karukku

Wealth without limit blunts the edge of the will to rise; want whets it keen.

  9. 559.

    Accounts reveal the drain

mukilkanda podharivaan veettin ozhukalthokaikanda podharivaan thaan

Seeing a cloud, a man knows where his house leaks; seeing the total, he knows his own.

A cloud warns of rain coming through the roof’s weak spots; the sum of the accounts shows money slipping away in the same manner.

  10. 560.

    Using up tomorrow

vidhaiyunnum koozhukke vithizhandaan naalumvidhaikuraiyadh thondrum pasi

For mere gruel he lost his seed, gruel that eats the seed; each day, as the seed runs low, hunger appears.

Seed-grain is next season’s crop: cooked into gruel, it feeds today and leaves less to sow.
