Chapter 47அதிகாரம் 47 உறைவிடம் Shelter
A roof, and the place one returns to.
461. Making a home
வெட்டவெளி மண்ணில் ஒருகோடு கோலினால்இட்டவிட மெல்லாம் அகம்
vettaveli mannil orukodu kolinaalittavida mellaam akam
On bare ground, one line drawn with a stick: all it marks is inside, and home.
The Tamil word akam means both ‘inside’ and ‘home’. One line scratched in the earth is enough to set a patch of ground apart.
462. Life enters the house
சுவரெடுத்துக் கூரை முடித்தபின் வந்தார்நுழைந்ததே வீட்டின் பிறப்பு
suvareduthuk koorai mudithapin vandaarnuzhaindadhe veettin pirappu
Once the walls are raised and the roof is finished, the house is born when whoever comes walks in.
463. Closing out the world
மூடினான் வீட்டை முழுவானங் கண்டானோமூடினான் கண்ணை முதல்
moodinaan veettai muzhuvaanang kandaanomoodinaan kannai mudhal
Did the man who shut his house see the whole sky? He had shut his eyes to begin with.
Tamil uses one verb, ‘closed’, for both the house and the eyes, as though they were one kind of act.
464. Knowing home is there
கூடிருக்கும் என்றுணர்ந்த புள்ளின் சிறகடங்கும்வீடிருக்கும் என்றுணர்ந்த நெஞ்சு
koodirukkum endrunarnda pullin sirakadangumveedirukkum endrunarnda nenju
A bird that knows its nest is there, its wing settling; a heart that knows its home is there.
465. A door allows sleep
கதவொன் றிருந்தால் இரவொன்று தூக்கம்கதவொன் றிலாவிடில் கண்
kadhavon rirundaal iravondru thookkamkadhavon rilaavidil kan
Where there is one door, night is sleep; where there is not one door, night is open eyes.
466. Shelter changes the rain
வீடிருந் தார்க்கு மழையொலி பாட்டாகும்வீடிலா தார்க்கது கூற்று
veedirun thaarkku mazhaiyoli paattaakumveedilaa thaarkkadhu kootru
To those who have a house, the sound of rain is a song; to those who have no house, it is death.
467. Room to plan ahead
சுவரொன்று கொண்டவன் சொல்லும்நாள் நூறுசுவரற் றவன்சொல்லும் சோறு
suvarondru kondavan sollumnaal noorusuvarar ravansollum soru
Someone with one wall talks of a hundred days; someone with no wall talks of rice.
468. Somewhere to set down
கூரையுள் வைத்தபொருள் காத்திருக்கும் வீடிலான்தோளிருக்கும் மட்டே சுமை
kooraiyul vaithaporul kaathirukkum veedilaantholirukkum matte sumai
Goods put under a roof are kept; for a man with no house, what he has is a burden, and only for as long as his shoulders last.
469. Home learned by heart
வழிதடு மாறா திருள்நிறை இல்லில்விழியன்று காலறியும் வீடு
vazhidhadu maaraa thirulnirai illilvizhiyandru kaalariyum veedu
Through a house full of darkness the way is walked without a stumble; the eye does not know the home, the foot does.
470. What shelter means
புகலிடமுள் ளார்க்குப் புகலிடமோர் சொல்லேபுகலிட மில்லார்க் குயிர்
pukalidamul laarkkup pukalidamor sollepukalida millaark kuyir
To those who have shelter, shelter is only a word; to those who have no shelter, it is life.
The Tamil word for shelter, pukalidam, means ‘a place to run into’: a refuge to flee to, not only a roof.
