Chapter 42அதிகாரம் 42 சுழற்சி Cycles
Recurring rhythms.
411. Ending is return
poomalarndu vaadum malarvaadi vithaakumpovadhe meendu varal
A flower blooms and withers, and the withered flower becomes seed. Going is coming back.
412. Each phase holds another
karumadhiyin ulle valarpirai yunduvarumadhiyin ulle kurai
Within the dark moon there is the waxing; within the coming moon, the waning.
413. Coming down counts
eruvaar eruvadhe kandaar iranguvadhumeruva thendrariyaa thaar
Those who climb have seen only the climbing; they do not know that coming down is climbing too.
414. Different phases, different work
kollan irumbais suduvaan kulirvippaanellaam padhathin vazhakku
The smith heats the iron and quenches it; both are the craft of temper.
415. Seasons beyond our wishes
kuyilin kuralai maruppaar kuyilinparuvam maruppa tharidhu
Some shut out the cuckoo’s call; its season is not so easily shut out.
In Tamil poetry the cuckoo’s call announces spring. A recurring season does not wait to be welcomed.
416. Letting decline happen
theyvundel theyka nilaavukkudh theyvadhuvevaaytha valarschikku ver
If waning comes, let it wane: the moon’s waxing has its root in waning.
417. Continuity through absence
aaruvatri naalum adhukuzhitha pallameneerariyum neervaru naal
The river may run dry, but when water comes again, it knows the very hollow the river dug.
When a river dries, the channel it carved remains in the ground.
418. Room for another
kolam azhithuk koduppadhu verukolamkolam ariyum kodai
What wiping away a kolam gives is another kolam: a gift every kolam knows.
A kolam is a rice-flour pattern drawn at the doorstep each day; each new one is drawn where yesterday’s was wiped away.
419. What looks finished
pulathul vizhundadhu sethadho venninnilathul kidandadhu vithu
Did what fell into the field die? What lay in the ground was a seed.
420. Time keeps its own record
paruvando rumbadiyum mansuvaril koduvarudame sollum mozhi
Season after season a line settles on the mud wall: the language the year itself speaks.
Unplastered earthen walls take on a fresh band with each season’s weather; over years they show stripe upon stripe.
