Chapter 132அதிகாரம் 132 நினைவுகூர்தல் Remembrance

Keeping the past and the dead in memory.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 1311.

    Where we keep them

ponaar pudhaitha nilamandru nenjakameponaar pudhainda idam

Not the ground they were laid in, but the heart within, is where the departed lie buried.

  2. 1312.

    Memory outlives presence

mukilnizhalaai vandu maraindaar ninaivomukilindrip peyyum mazhai

They came like the shadow of a cloud and passed; is their memory not rain that falls without a cloud?

The Tamil verb for ‘passed’ is also the gentle word for ‘passed away’: the one remembered may have left, or died.

  3. 1313.

    Learning from those before

munnor idariya kallaik kadappadhepinnor ninaivin payan

Those who come after step across the stone their forebears stumbled on: that is the use of remembering.

  4. 1314.

    A second death

irandaar iruppar ninaivil ninaivumirandaal irumurai saavu

The dead live on in memory; if memory dies too, they have died twice.

  5. 1315.

    Memory changes the past

nadandadhanai maatravonaa thenpar ninaivonadandadhaiyum maatri vidum

People say that what has happened cannot be changed, but memory changes even what has happened.

  6. 1316.

    The hurt we keep

novillaa nooradiyum nokkaadhu kaalaimulnovondre nirkum nuzhaindu

A hundred painless steps land and go unheeded; the pain of one thorn goes into the foot, and stays.

  7. 1317.

    Support left unremembered

uschi kadanda kadhaisolvaar oorellaamaschudhannais solvaar ilar

The whole town tells the tale of the summit crossed; no one speaks of the axle itself.

The axle bore the cart over the top. In Tamil, ‘the axle itself’ can also be heard as Achyutan, a name of Vishnu.

  8. 1318.

    Names kept in speech

peyarnirkum kallinmel pesaadhu nirkumpeyarnirkum naavil nadandu

A name stands on stone, and stands without speaking; a name stands on the tongue, walking.

  9. 1319.

    Remembered without shortcomings

sethaar kuraiyais sekukkum ninaivenumputhaadai porkkum pukazh

Fame drapes the dead in a new garment called memory, and the garment does away with their shortcomings.

  10. 1320.

    What parting leaves

karaikkum kadalul karaiyaak karungalpirivil padhinda ninaivu

In the sea that dissolves all things, a dark stone that does not dissolve: the memory pressed in at parting.

The sea is all that wears away with time.
