thaangum maramariyaa thennaam thalarkodikkudhthaangennum sollin edai

The tree that holds the drooping vine does not know how much the words ‘Hold me’ weigh for the vine.

  2. 1192.

    The carer’s own

aduthavarkkor noytheerppaal aangavalnoys seyaieduthanaippaar illaa iravu

She cures another’s illness; her own child, ill, has no one to lift and hold it through the night.

  3. 1193.

    Shame of being lifted

vizhundavan kaiyetraan melerum paaramvizhundavan nenjerum naan

Onto the man who takes the fallen one’s hand, a weight climbs; into the fallen one’s heart, shame climbs.

The fall may be of body or of fortune. One verb of rising carries both the helper’s load and the fallen one’s shame.

The creeper climbs, the branch bends; that bending is the duty of the branch that holds it.

  5. 1195.

    The carer wears away

uppittaar uppaayk karaindadhanai yaarunarvaarseppaadhe pomthuyar adhu

Who sees that those who put in the salt have melted away as salt? That is a sorrow that passes without ever being told.

  6. 1196.

    Care changes hands

thanniru kaalmel niruthiyavar kaalthalarndaalthanniru tholmel sumai

If the one who set you on your own two feet falters on his, he becomes a load on your own two shoulders.

  7. 1197.

    Wanting to be needed

For those who long to be needed, all giving is nothing but the worm on a fishhook. Know this.

  8. 1198.

    No one carries them

thaanginaar thaangidh thalarndaar thalarndaaraidhthaanguvaa rillaadha naal

They bore, and bore until they gave way; this is the day when no one bears those who have given way.

  9. 1199.

    Visiting and tending

kaana varuvaar kanakkilaar naadorumpena varuvaar silar

Countless come to see; day after day, few come to tend.

On the days they are fed, they do not notice the feeding; on the day they are not, they notice: it is not being fed that speaks of the food.
