Chosen companionship.

  1. 1201.

    Choosing our company

yaarodu vaazhvar adhuvaavar aadhalaalyaarendru thervadhe nadpu

Since people become what they live with, discerning whom to live with is friendship itself.

  2. 1202.

    Giving before asking

kelaa thalippavar kenmaiye kettapinkelaa thalippaar ilar

Friendship is giving unasked; after the asking, no one gives unasked.

Once a friend has had to ask, the chance to give before the need was spoken has passed for good.

  3. 1203.

    Beyond wanting friendship

vizhaivaal vilaindadhandru veerunadpu manninazhaippindri vanda mazhai

A noble friendship is not grown by wanting; it is rain that came to the earth without the earth calling for it.

  4. 1204.

    Asking without shame

nadpin perumai thunaikettal naanandrukelaamai naanudaiyaar naan

In the greatness of friendship there is no shame in asking for support; for anyone with a sense of shame, the shame lies in not asking.

The Tamil word for shame, naan, also means modesty or bashfulness.

  5. 1205.

    Friendship beyond contact

kaivittum naanolikkum veenaiye nadpenpakaivittaal oyum murasu

Friendship, they say, is the veena, whose string sounds on though the hand lets go; the drum falls silent when the hand lets go.

  6. 1206.

    Sharing their success

veezhschikkuk kaikoduthal koodum ezhuschikkunenjam koduthal aridhu

When someone falls, a hand can be given; when someone rises, the heart can rarely be given.

  7. 1207.

    Small words destroy

sirudheeyil vendadhor senvalar kaadusirusolil vendadhor nadpu

A small fire burned a forest grown far and wide; a small word burned a friendship.

  8. 1208.

    Sensing unspoken needs

theendaa narambadhirum yaazhpol uraiyaadhavendal unarvadhu nadpu

Like a harp string that sounds untouched, friendship is the sensing of an unspoken wish.

  9. 1209.

    Friends correct our faults

kannaadi kaattiya maasozhippaar nanparenpaarkannaadi porppaar pakai

Those who clear the stain a mirror shows are called friends; those who cover the mirror, enemies.

  10. 1210.

    Care that continues

nattanaal nadpandru naadorum neerpeythuthottakaikal kaakkum thodar

The day of planting is not friendship; friendship is the bond the planting hands keep, watering it every day.
