Chapter 118அதிகாரம் 118 நெருக்கம் Intimacy
Closeness of body and heart between lovers.
1171. Attuned to each other
koottir puraavirandum thoonginum ondrasaiyinmoottum vizhippe uravu
Both doves are asleep in the nest; one stirs, and the stir kindles the other awake. Closeness is that waking.
1172. Holding without gripping
alli anaithaal azhiyum manarpaavaiullam anaippin uru
If the arms scoop up a sand doll and embrace it, it crumbles; if the heart embraces it, there is form.
1173. A shared rhythm
arukaruke thoongupavar mooscholi naalumorumoosche aakum iraa
Night after night, the breathing of those who sleep side by side becomes a single breath.
1174. The touch we know
pudhukkai thodumidam nokum pazhakkaithodumida mellaam malar
The place a new hand touches hurts; every place an old hand touches blossoms.
1175. Closeness felt differently
thazhuvuvaar thamthodkup poovaam thazhuvundaarthamthodkup poottum vilangu
To those who embrace, it is a flower on their own shoulders; to those who suffer the embrace, a fetter locked onto their own shoulders.
1176. Hard to separate
kallidaip pukkaver kallodu kallaakumpullip pirippari thaam
A root that has worked its way in between stones becomes stone with the stone; what has clung like that is hard to part.
1177. Touch that stays
theendidh therindavar theendaadha neramumtheendum avarnenjil kai
For those who have touched and come to know, even when they are not touching, the hand touches their heart.
1178. Words need renewing
poosiya ennei pudhukkaavid daalthuruppoonpesiya sollum thuru
A hinge oiled once and not again: rust. A word once spoken, too: rust.
1179. Knowing has limits
mukamarivaal mooscharivaal mutrumunar vaaleakamariyaal aazhnda akam
She knows the face, she knows the breath, she perceives it all; the heart, deep within, she does not know.
1180. Ending over a trifle
adaitha karaiyin adikkasivun dendreudaippaar uravin anai
Claiming the mended bank seeps at its foot, they break the whole dam of the bond.
An embankment holds back water; seepage at its foot is a slow trickle, not a breach.
