Chapter 11அதிகாரம் 11 பொறாமை Envy

Pain at another's good.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 101.

    Envy behind compassion

pirarnoy porukkalaar enpar thamakkulpirarseer porukkalaa noy

They are said to be unable to bear another’s pain; within them lies a pain that cannot bear another’s good.

  2. 102.

    Blind to our losses

thankoodai nirkap pirarkoodai saaykkumavanthankoodai saayndadhari yaan

He tips over other people’s baskets, trusting his own to stand, and never knows that it has tipped.

  3. 103.

    Comparison makes us suffer

nirambukunda noolaruke nirkum verunoolniraminmai kande azhal

Beside the thread that colour has soaked into, the bare thread sees its own colourlessness and burns.

  4. 104.

    What envy reveals

azhukkaaru kannaadi yaamthan vizhaivinozhukkaa runarthum mukam

Envy is a mirror, a face that shows the bent of one’s own desire.

  5. 105.

    Belittling another’s good

ottaik kudame yariyum niraikudathinneeraik kasiven rikazhvu

Only the leaky pot would scorn the full pot’s water as seepage.

  6. 106.

    Another’s joy hurts

vendravar veesum narumalar thotravarkkunindra neruppin pori

The fragrant flower tossed in the winner’s hour is, to the loser, a spark from a fire that keeps burning.

  7. 107.

    Pity mixed with pleasure

theengutraa nendravanmel thondrum irakkathulthengu morudhuli nanju

In pity for one said to have come to harm, a single drop of poison settles.

  8. 108.

    Relief at another’s fall

avanveezhndaa nendriravil thoonguvaan thookkamavanveezhschi yandro adhu

‘He has fallen,’ a man says, and sleeps the night: is that sleep not his own fall?

  9. 109.

    No shame in pain

olivaravaal kannimaithal kutramandru adhevalarvaaraal thondrum vali

When light comes, the eye blinks, and that is no fault; when others rise, a pang rises in the one who watches, and that is no fault either.

  10. 110.

    Another’s gain lingers

thotravan nenjil thodarvadhu punnallamaatravan petra alavu

What lives on in the heart of the one who lost is not a wound; it is the measure of what his rival gained.
