Chapter 102அதிகாரம் 102 விளையாட்டு Play

Doing something for its own sake.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 1011.

    Play needs no purpose

payanariyaar pillai payanarindaar aadaarpayanariyaa aattam payan

Those who reckon no use are children; those who reckon use do not play. Play that reckons no use is itself the use.

‘Children’ here means anyone who plays without counting what play is for, whatever their age.

  2. 1012.

    Too ashamed to play

aadar kazhaku vizhudhale naanuvaaraadaar vizhaare avar

Falling is itself the beauty of play. The shamefaced do not play; they never fall.

  3. 1013.

    Discovery through play

neerkkaakadh thonduvor neerkkunirpar thondalukkaayththonduvor kaanpar nilam

Those who dig for water are bound to water; those who dig for the sake of digging see the earth.

  4. 1014.

    Shared joy without force

pandondru podhum pakirndaadum inpamvalindaal varuvadhan ru

One ball is enough; the joy of shared play does not come by force.

  5. 1015.

    Childhood stays for life

siruvar vilaiyaattil theyum muzhangaalperiyaark kazhiyaa vadu

The knee that wears thin in children’s play becomes, on the grown, a scar that never fades.

  6. 1016.

    Absorbed in play

aaduven endraal asaindaal asaivinulaadiyaval ponaal asaivu

‘I will dance,’ she said, and swayed; within the sway the dancer was gone. Only the sway.

  7. 1017.

    Seeing ourselves anew

koothaadum podhudale thaanendraal nindrapinpaarthaalthan kaiyaip pudhidhu

While she danced, she said, ‘I am my body.’ When she stopped, she looked at her own hand as if it were new.

  8. 1018.

    Making worlds from little

mannir kizhithakodu maamadhilaai nindradhukaankannir kanavin vali

See: a line scratched in the earth stood as a great wall, so strong is the dream in the eye.

  9. 1019.

    Play comes back

vilaiyaadal karpikka vendaadhe moothaarvilaiyaadal meendadhe paar

No one has to teach play: look, the elders are playing again.

  10. 1020.

    Enjoyment survives the loss

alaikaraiman meendum kuvikkunj sirukainilaiyazhindun theyaa niraivu

A small hand heaps the sand at the waves’ edge again; the shape comes undone, and still the fullness does not wane.
