Chapter 1அதிகாரம் 1 விழிப்புணர்வு Awareness
What noticing, before any judgment, changes.
1. Life from within
akaram ezhuthin uyiraam anaithumakathin vazhiye uyir
The letter A is the life of the letters; through what is within us, all things come alive.
Uyir means both ‘vowel’ and ‘life’: a consonant stays mute until a vowel sounds within it. Akam, ‘the inner self’, begins with the same A.
2. Names replace seeing
peyariduka poovirken rennel peyarittaalpoovai maraikkum peyar
Do not even think of giving the flower a name; if the flower is named, the name hides the flower.
3. Too much goes unheard
orumani kottinaal oorvizhikkum noorumanikotta yaarum sevidu
Strike one bell and the whole town wakes; strike a hundred bells and everyone is deaf.
4. Thinking interrupts doing
nadaikar rirundaan nadaiyai ninaithaannadaidhadu maariya ner
He had learned to walk; he turned his mind to his walk, and in that moment his walk faltered.
5. How return begins
vazhidhavaris sendradhai nenjam aridhalvazhimeela vaikkum vizhi
When the heart knows it has strayed from the path, that knowing is the eye that brings it back.
6. Missing what we hold
kaippiditha kolaal thadavuvaal kolengeendrazhuvaal kandilal kol
She searches with the stick in her hand and weeps, “Where is the stick?” and does not see the stick.
7. Habit dulls feeling
naadorum thottakayir raalkaiyin tholthirandutheendal marakkum unarvu
The rope it touches day after day thickens the hand’s skin, and the feeling forgets the touch.
8. Absence makes us notice
aatroram vaazhndavan aatriraischal kettadhillaimaatroor amaidhi sevi
The man who has lived on the riverbank has never heard the river’s roar; the silence of another town gives him ears for it.
All his life the roar has never stopped around him; another town is the first place without it.
9. Recognising the strain
kayirarunda naalandro kaalaikkudh thondrumayarvellaam kattin vali
Isn’t the day the rope snaps the day the bull sees that all its weariness was the strain of the tether?
10. Surrounded but unseeing
siraippattaar vaankaanpar vaanmuzhudhum vaankeezhpirandavar vaanariyaar thaam
Prisoners see the sky; those born under the whole of it are the ones who do not know it.
‘Those born under the sky’: people who have lived beneath it all their lives, never shut away from it.
