Chapter 76அதிகாரம் 76 கனிவு Kindness
Goodwill in everyday dealing.
751. Small acts matter
thanneer konarndaanor sitradiyaan thannarasankanneer konarndadhuak kai
A lowly servant brought water; that same hand brought tears to his king’s eyes.
‘Lowly servant’ is literally ‘small servant’: the lowest of a household, set against his own king at the top.
752. Without an audience
vilakkeriyum paarppavarkko ennaadhu paarkkaathirundaalum sutrum oli
A lamp does not ask whether it burns for those who watch; even when no one watches, its light spreads all around.
753. Softness that harms
mensol koduthumei sollaadhaan anpenpaankondraan marundaal kolai
He who gives soft words and does not speak the truth, and calls it love, has killed: murder by medicine.
754. Kindness without announcement
nanaikkum panikkuk kuralillai nenjainanaikkum kanivum adhu
The dew that wets things has no voice; the kindness that wets the heart is the same.
755. Kindness in looking away
veezhndavanmun verupakkam nokkuvaar nokkilethaazhndadhoru thannarul thaan
Before one who has fallen, some look away; in that very look, a cool grace that bows.
Fallen: brought down in fortune or standing. In Tamil a ‘cool’ grace is soothing and gentle.
756. Boasting spoils giving
koduthen enumsol koduthadhanaik kollumkodukkum mukame kodai
Saying ‘I gave’ kills what was given; the only gift is the face that gives.
In Tamil, ‘face’ also means manner: the bearing and warmth with which something is given.
757. Kindness without bargaining
vilaipesi vaanguvaan vaanikan pesaathilaipodu vaane aram
One who haggles over the price and then buys is a merchant; one who, without a word, lays out the banana leaf for a meal is virtue itself.
758. Lending a hand
kaiyirandum veesi nadappar orukaiyaidhthandaal nadakkum aram
People walk along with both hands swinging; if one of those hands is given, virtue walks.
759. Kindness can wait
padhamariyum kollan poruthe adippaanidhamarivaan sollaan udan
The smith who knows the temper waits, and then strikes; the one who knows what is good does not speak at once.
760. Care without urging
unnen ruraiyaa thuvappodu vaithakoozhkanneerin nalla marundu
Plain gruel, put down gladly with no word of ‘eat’: good medicine, set against tears.
