Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 761.

    Feeling another’s pain

thanneerkkudh thanneer surakkum nilathiyalpukanneerkkuk kanneer parivu

It is the nature of the ground to well up water in answer to water; compassion is tears welling up in answer to tears.

  2. 762.

    Silent suffering goes unheard

solvaar thuyarkke seviyundu sollaauyirthuyar kedpaar evar

There are ears only for the suffering of those who tell it; who hears the suffering of the living that is never told?

  3. 763.

    One face moves us

nooruper veendenir saavaadha nenjamorooruneerk kankandu saam

The heart that does not die when a hundred people perish dies at the sight of one eye welling with tears.

  4. 764.

    Without sharing the pain

thaakam ariyaa nadhiyum varadsiyaiekidh thanikkum inidhu

A river that has never known thirst goes out to the drought and sweetly quenches it.

  5. 765.

    Another’s pain becomes ours

eendraval kaakkum iravil kuzhandaiyinkaayschal irumeyyin thee

When the woman who bore the child keeps watch over it through the night, the child’s fever is one fire burning in two bodies.

  6. 766.

    Pain teaches gentleness

aariya punnin arivukonda kaiviralkalverupun melladh thodum

Fingers that carry the knowledge of a healed wound touch another wound gently.

  7. 767.

    Pity confined to our own

namarnoy arivaar pirarnoy ariyaarnamarpirar ennum pini

They know the pain of our own people, not the pain of others; this is the sickness that sorts ours from others.

  8. 768.

    Feeling beneath hardness

irangaamai katraar irangaamai allairangudhalai moodiya man

Those who have learned not to pity are not pitiless; they are earth laid over pity.

  9. 769.

    When unfeeling takes hold

novaarkku novaamai noyandru naadpadinnovaamai noyaai vidum

To feel no pain for those in pain is not yet a sickness; let the days pass, and that unfeeling becomes one.

  10. 770.

    Feeling must become action

pirarnoy thamadhaai unarvadhor paadhipirarnoy thamadhaayth tholaippu

Feeling the suffering of others as one’s own is one half; then there is taking away the suffering of others as one’s own.
