Chapter 71அதிகாரம் 71 நேர்மை Integrity
Being the same inside and out.
701. Character runs deeper
nanaindaniram naarkkulle naalum uraiyumpunaindaniram porvai puram
Colour soaked into cloth lives in the fibre day after day; colour put on is an outer covering.
702. Care shows in use
penuva thenpar peridhuraippar kaippiditheynda karuviye sol
They say they cherish it and speak of it in lofty words; the tool with the worn-down handle, nothing more, is what says so.
A handle wears down only under the hand that grips it, day after day.
703. Words without deeds
sotriram ondraays seyatriram veraayinvitriram naanindri vil
When someone’s words go one way and their deeds another, they are a bow without string or shame.
In Tamil, naan means both ‘bowstring’ and ‘shame’. A bow without its string cannot shoot.
704. Silence reveals character
uraithaal theriyum ulokam uraiyaathirundaal theriyum kunam
Metal shows what it is when it is rubbed on the touchstone; a person shows what they are when they keep from speaking.
705. Integrity under negotiation
vilaiyatra nermai vilaipesin adhunilaiyatra nenjin kuri
Integrity has no price; to haggle over a price for it is a sign of an unsteady heart.
706. What duplicity reveals
mukamondru kaatti mukamondru vaithaarmukame ilaadhaar mukam
One face shown, another kept: the face of those who have no face at all.
707. Promises meet practice
viduppen enaschollum vaaymoodi meendumthodukkum viralsollum mei
The mouth speaks: ‘I will let it go,’ and closes. The finger that takes it up again speaks the truth.
708. Unchanged when alone
yaarum ilaavidathum thannilai maaraadhaanthoonir poritha ezhuthu
Someone who stays as he was even in a place where there is no one at all is letters carved into a stone pillar.
709. Claims outrun change
patrilen yaadhodum enpaar pazhambaayinsutru madippuraikkum sorvu
‘I am bound to nothing,’ they say; the curled folds of their old mat tell on their lapse.
A mat kept rolled for years holds its curl even when spread flat.
710. Worth beyond claims
karsilai pesaadhu kandavar nenjasaiyummadsilai koovum vilai
The stone statue does not speak, yet those who see it are moved at heart; the clay statue cries out, and it has a price.
