nilaiyaa thavarkku nilaiye puyalaamnilaithaarkkup pullaam puyal

For those who cannot stand firm, even stillness is a storm; for those who stand firm, a storm is grass.

In Tamil, grass stands for something slight and of no account.

  3. 283.

    Steady while shaken

    நிறைகுட மேந்திய கையசை யாமல்இறையுள் நடுங்கும் நரம்பு

A hand holding a brimming pot does not move; inside the wrist, a sinew trembles.

  4. 284.

    When steadiness hardens

    கலங்கா திருப்பவர் கண்ணியர் கண்ணீர்கலங்கா திருப்பவர் கல்

katroonin vanmai thanakkudh therivadhonirpadhe thoonin thavam

Does a stone pillar know its own strength? Standing itself is the pillar’s discipline.

The Tamil word is tavam: a long, self-denying discipline kept up through patient endurance.

The unshaken woman who mingles with the shaken many becomes their lighthouse.
