Chapter 28அதிகாரம் 28 பணிவு Humility
Holding oneself rightly.
271. What bending opens
thaazhum thalaiye kadhavaidh thirakkumnimirnda thalaikkus suvar
Only the bowed head opens the door; for the upright head, a wall.
272. Humility makes things possible
nimirnda viralaal kuzhaloodhaa nirkumkuninda virale isai
A finger held straight does not play the flute; the bent finger is itself the music.
273. Keeping self-respect
thanmadhippuk kondu panivaar irukaraiyumkonda punalin nirai
Those who bow yet keep their self-respect are full like a river brimming from bank to bank.
The Tamil word for ‘fullness’ also means ‘self-restraint’: a river full to both banks still keeps within them.
274. Humility among equals
melaarkkudh thaazhvaar palarundu mannilnikaraarkkudh thaazhvaar aridhu
Many bow to those above them; on this earth, those who bow to their equals are rare.
275. Bowing for applause
thaazhschi pukazhkkenil athaazhschi thaazhschiyandruveezhschi pukazhvizhaive kaan
Humility practised for the sake of fame is not humility. See it: the craving for fame is itself the fall.
276. Strength that bows
madindavil ambeyyum nerkkolthaan eyyaaadangiyadhe vanmai yari
The bent bow shoots; the straight rod does not. Know that what is bowed and held in is strength.
277. Worth without display
pudhaindu sumandadhe thoonkal pudhaiyaamidhandadhe vetrup podi
What sank into the ground and bore the load is the pillar’s stone; what stayed on the surface and drifted is only dust.
278. Fullness bends, emptiness boasts
mutriya nellin kadhirkavizhum mutraakkadhirnimirum kaatruk kuraithu
The ripe ear of paddy bows; the unripe ear stands upright and holds forth to the wind.
279. Staying open to receive
akandra kadalthaazhnde aarukalaik kollumakandra manamthaazhnde kol
The wide sea takes in the rivers by lying low; wide mind, lie low, and receive.
280. Listening beyond ourselves
kettu nadandaar kadalkandaar thammaiyekettu nadandaar suvar
Those who listened and went their way saw the sea; those who listened to themselves alone and went their way, a wall.
