Chapter 16அதிகாரம் 16 மகிழ்ச்சி Joy
Gladness of heart.
151. Joy holds sorrow
thunpathul inpam thulirkkum thulirthapininpathul thunpam vidhai
Joy sprouts within suffering; once it has sprouted, suffering lies within that joy as a seed.
152. Joy that stays
nirainda kudathai vazhithapin eerammaraiyaa thadhuve makizh
A full pot, scraped out, still holds its dampness: that itself is joy.
The Tamil word for this dampness also means tenderness of heart.
153. Joy can’t be forced
viralaal malarmottai vindidalaam veyyilvirivikkum thaane vizhaindu
A finger can pry a bud open; sunlight, unbidden and willing, makes it unfold.
154. Joy changes the world
makizhvaarkku mannum visumbe makizhaathavarkku visumbum nilam
To those who rejoice, the earth itself is sky; to those who do not rejoice, even the sky is ground.
155. Joy beyond buying
vilaipesi vaangiya thenilum vaadaiyilthaane manakkum malar
A flower fragrant of itself in the wind outdoes honey haggled for and bought.
156. Retelling brings joy back
pillai nadandadhais solvaal avalkannilmeendum nadakkum makizhvu
Whenever she tells how the child walked, joy walks again in her eyes.
157. Joy at its ending
kanindapazham kombir piriyum piriveinimaiyin eetradi yaam
A ripened fruit parts from its branch; that parting is itself the last line of sweetness.
158. Brightness without joy
vilakkeriyum veettinul leyirundum inpamvilangaadha nenjam irul
Even inside a house where a lamp is burning, a heart on which joy does not dawn is darkness.
159. The joy of reunion
pongalpong kaamal manambongum meendavanaikkandaal marandaal aduppu
The pongal had not yet boiled over; the heart boiled over. She saw the man who had come back, and forgot the stove.
Pongal is rice boiled with milk; at the Tamil harvest festival of the same name, the pot boiling over is the awaited, auspicious moment.
160. Survival without triumph
nedunaal amizhndaar nimirndapin vetrithoduvadhillai moosche thodum
When those who were long under come up at last, victory does not touch them; only breath does.
