Expecting good not yet arrived.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 141.

    Hope without denial

ilaiyudhir kaalam arindum perumaramneerkudikkum nindra nilathu

Knowing the season when its leaves will fall, the great tree still drinks from the ground it stands in.

  2. 142.

    Hope in action

kandruvaru munne surakkum karavaiyinnandruvaru munne nadai

As a cow’s milk flows while her calf is still on its way to her, so our feet are on the road before the good arrives.

The Tamil word for ‘walk’ (nadai, a going) also means one’s conduct, one’s way of living.

  3. 143.

    A little sustains

akalamelaam vatrum azharpozhudhil paaraissirukeeral neertharum saal

In the hour of heat the whole wide land dries up; a small crack in a rock runs with water.

  4. 144.

    Expecting an end

theerumen raalneruppum theendar kinidhaakumtheeraa theninpaniyum thee

If it is going to end, even fire is pleasant to the touch; if it is not, even frost is fire.

  5. 145.

    Seeking through darkness

naatrin munaiyirulir redum vidiyalaidhthedaa vidhaikkul irul

In the dark, the tip of a sprout seeks the dawn; the seed that does not seek has the darkness inside it.

Both lie in the same dark soil: one seed has already put out a shoot, the other is still closed.

  6. 146.

    Hope has limits

kanmoodi veezhndaarkkuk kaidhaangum nambikkaimanmoodi veezhndaarkku man

For those who fall with their eyes closed, hope is a hand that holds them up; for those who fall with earth closed over them, what meets them is earth.

Earth closed over someone is the picture of a grave. In Tamil, ‘eyes closed’ (kan moodi) and ‘earth closed’ (man moodi) differ by one sound.

  7. 147.

    Despair cannot predict

vidiyaa thenave iravu uraikkumuraithal iravin iyalpu

Night always insists there will be no dawn; saying so is the nature of night.

  8. 148.

    Hope from others

thannambik kaidholaindaal nenjil pirarvaithanambikkai vaazhum vidhai

She has lost her trust in herself; the trust others placed in her heart is a seed, and it is alive.

  9. 149.

    Possibility already within

puzhuvul sirakum sirakul parappumvazhuvaa thirukkum vazhi

Within the grub, the wing; within the wing, the flight: this is the way that holds true.

A grub is the soft larva of an insect, before it has any wings.

  10. 150.

    Hope held quietly

kaaymannil vithittaar kanneeraik kedpadhillaivaaymoodik kaakkum vidhai

The seed does not ask for the tears of those who sowed in parched ground; with its mouth closed, it guards the life within it.

The sowers have wept over the dry field, and to a seed tears would be water. Beneath, the seed lies still unopened.
