Chapter 107அதிகாரம் 107 எச்சம் Legacy

What one leaves behind.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 1061.

    Giving outlives death

irappaan oruvan kodaiyaal iravaanpirappaan palarkkul nilaithu

Through his giving, the one who dies does not die; he is born within many, and there he stays.

  2. 1062.

    Marks left before us

padikkallin pallam namadhandru munnornadaiyir kuzhinda vazhi

The hollow in the step is not ours; it is a way worn hollow by the walking of those before us.

  3. 1063.

    Results come after us

valarthavan thottamittaan veliyittaan nindraankalaithavan ponapin poo

He grew a garden, fenced it and stood there. He grew weary and went away. After him, a flower.

  4. 1064.

    Words outlast names

marandaan peyarai maravaan mozhiyaiirandum avalvaazhum vaai

He forgot her name; he does not forget her speech. Though she is dead, she lives in the mouth.

  5. 1065.

    What work leaves

araithaar maraindaar araithakal nirkumuraiyin manamum adhu

Those who ground the sandalwood are gone; the stone they ground it on stands, and so does the fragrance of their words.

Sandalwood is rubbed on a stone into fragrant paste. The Tamil word for that rubbing, urai, also means speech.

  6. 1066.

    What is passed on lives

orupozhthil oodhi aviyumoru theenoorukaimaari vaazhum kanal

A fire given one breath in one moment goes out; an ember passed through a hundred hands lives on.

  7. 1067.

    Made for unknown hands

maalaiyin poothoduthaal maalai yariyaalekaalaiyil soottum karam

She who strung flowers into a garland in the evening does not know the hand that puts it on in the morning.

In Tamil, maalai means both ‘evening’ and ‘garland’.

  8. 1068.

    Beyond our own memory

seythaar marandaar seyalmattum nindradhuvepeythaar maranda peyal

Those who did it forgot; the deed alone remained, like rain forgotten by those who poured it down.

In Tamil poetry, rain is ‘poured’ by the clouds.

  9. 1069.

    Acting without seeing

padaimudinda mannir parungandru nattaalkadaimudivaik kaanaal nadum

Where the fighting ended, she planted a sturdy sapling; she does not see the end of it, and she plants on.

  10. 1070.

    What bears fruit

pudhaithavar escham puzhudhiyo dondrumvidhaithavar escham vilai

What those who bury leave behind mingles with the dust; what those who sow leave behind comes up as harvest.
