Chapter 90அதிகாரம் 90 அடைக்கலம் Sanctuary

A safe place.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 891.

    Small refuge, great relief

sirakodinda pullukkus serum ilaiyinsirunizhalum vaanam adhu

For a bird with a snapped wing, even the small shade of a leaf that comes its way is the sky.

  2. 892.

    Knowing safety’s worth

vellam arindavarkke mettunilam kottaiyaamvellariyaa thaarkkadhuven man

High ground is a fortress only to those who have known a flood; to those who have never known a flood, that same ground is pale earth.

  3. 893.

    Safety can confine

vandaarkke vaayil thirakkum adaikkalamesendrariyaa thaarkkus sirai

A refuge is an open gate to those who come in from outside; to those who have never gone out, it is a prison.

  4. 894.

    Danger called safety

neruppul irundaar nizhalai ninaiyaarneruppe nizhalennum nenju

For those who live in fire, shade does not come to mind; the heart calls the fire itself shade.

  5. 895.

    More than grandeur

pukaludaiyaal pulveedum ponmanaiye kooraiyakandraval koyilum kaadu

For a woman who has refuge, even a grass hut is a house of gold; for a woman whose roof is gone, even a temple is a wilderness.

  6. 896.

    Free to stop watching

adaikkalam kondaan irukannum moodumadaikkalame kannin imai

Whoever has taken refuge closes both eyes; refuge itself is the eyelid of the eye.

  7. 897.

    Free to be themselves

thangum paravaikal thammisaiyil paadudhalethaangum marathin thiram

The birds that stay on it singing each in their own melody: this is the worth of the tree that bears them.

  8. 898.

    Refuge turns predator

marandedi vandapul laimarame veezhthinmaramalla vedan maram

If a bird comes seeking a tree and that very tree brings it down, it is no tree; that tree is a hunter.

  9. 899.

    Letting the tears come

aayiram naalaai adakkiya vankanneerthaayen razhaithaal varum

Hard tears, held back for a thousand days, come at the word ‘mother’.

  10. 900.

    Someone stays awake

thanjam adaindaan thuyilkolvaan athanjamenjaa vizhippin idam

Whoever reaches a refuge sleeps; that refuge is a place where the watch never ends.
