Chapter 125அதிகாரம் 125 மனநிறைவு Contentment

Settled sufficiency.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 1241.

    What fullness allows

neernirainda kuttai nilaakkaattum neerkuraindakuttai puzhudhi padum

A pond full of water shows the moon; when its water falls, dust falls on it.

  2. 1242.

    Remembering what suffices

varisaiyaai noorumani kothaan marandaanorumani podhum kazhuthu

He strung a hundred beads in a row and forgot: one bead is enough for a neck.

  3. 1243.

    When pursuit fails

noolarunda pattathin nunmakizhschi polavarumkaalarunda vedkaik kali

Like the fine, slight joy of a kite whose string is cut comes the delight of a desire that has lost its legs.

A desire with no legs can no longer run after anything; a kite whose string is cut is no longer pulled.

  4. 1244.

    Enough makes wealth

podhumena vaazhpavar thaame perunjelvarpodhaadhen paarvari yar

Only those who live saying ‘enough’ are the rich; those who say ‘not enough’ are the poor.

In Tamil the two sayings are one word: podhum (‘enough’) and podhaadhu (‘not enough’). Only the negative separates rich from poor.

  5. 1245.

    A living calm

nirambiyaar nenjin amaidhi kuzhalinirangiyapin nirkum oli

The calm in a fulfilled heart is the sound that lingers once the flute has played.

  6. 1246.

    Already enough within

serinda ulathaarkkus senporul vendaanirainda kulathirku neer

Those whose hearts are full have no need of wealth from afar, as a full tank has no need of water.

  7. 1247.

    Cutting back brings fullness

kuraikka niraiyum kuraiyaadhu nirkumniraikka niraiyum kurai

Cut back, and fullness stays, unlessened; fill up, and what fills is lack.

Nothing is named as cut back or filled. Tamil crosses two roots, nirai (fullness, to fill) and kurai (lack, to lessen), so each act ends in the other’s word.

  8. 1248.

    Judging makes it enough

iruppa thamaiyu menilpodhum illaiiruppadhum podhaa thenil

If what there is will serve, it is enough; if even what there is falls short, there is nothing.

The holding is the same in both halves; what changes is the holder’s verdict on it.

  9. 1249.

    Knowing our measure

thammalave kolvar niraivudaiyaar vellamumthannalave kollum kudam

The fulfilled take their own measure and no more; even in a flood, a pot holds only its own.

  10. 1250.

    Already in hand

neruppai eduthuschen raalvelischam thediiruppariyaal kaiyir kanal

She took fire and went out looking for light; she does not know of the ember in her hand.
