Chapter 124அதிகாரம் 124 பற்றுறுதி Loyalty
Faithfulness under test.
1231. The cost of holding
thariyin adimaram theyum kayitraalniruthum vilangin poruttu
The foot of the tethering post wears thin where the rope rubs it, for the sake of the animal it holds still.
1232. Friends can refuse
venduva thellaam tharuvadhu nadpallavendaa thenaschollum nadpu
Friendship is not giving all that is wanted; friendship is saying, ‘Not that.’
The friend says ‘Not that’ to something the other person wants.
1233. Friendship changes shape
karaimaarum aarum kadalai vidaadhuvaraimaarum nadpin vazhi
Even a river that shifts its banks does not leave the sea; nor does friendship that shifts its bounds.
1234. When support withdraws
tholodu tholkoduthaar thorpadhu thammudaiyatholai madakkiya naal
For those who stand shoulder to shoulder, defeat is the day their own shoulder is drawn back.
1235. Sorrow after leaving
kodipona pinnum kozhukombu nirkumpadinirkum nenjir padar
Even after the vine has gone, the pole it climbed still stands; so sorrow stands on in the heart.
The Tamil word for this sorrow, padar, also means a creeper’s spreading.
1236. Staying through trouble
vellam varumbodhu vittodum pullinamullirukkum kalle anai
When the flood comes, the flock takes wing and is gone; the stone that stays is the dam.
1237. Losing our own self
uravukkul thoyndavar petradhenna thoyndaniramandridh thamniram il
What did they gain, who were steeped in their ties? Only the colour they were steeped in; their own colour, none.
1238. Support without conditions
kalimanno kallo karungazhiyo ennaadhthalarvilaa verpol thunai
Clay, stone or dark marsh, the root does not ask which ground it has met, and does not slacken. A companion is like that root.
1239. Covering a wrong
kutram maraithavar tholilum kutramepatrik kidakkum pukai
Even on the shoulder of whoever hid it, the fault clings on as smoke.
1240. Friends speak hotly
kollan adippir kanandradhe vaalaakumsollir kanandradhe nadpu
Only iron that glowed under the smith’s hammer becomes a sword; only what glowed in words is friendship.
‘Glowed’ also means flared up, as in heat of temper: a friend’s hot, hard words.
