The pull toward another person.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 1121.

    The heart doesn’t count

kannedhire noorirukkak kandadhondre kannaakumennariyaa nenjin thozhil

A hundred stand before the eyes, and the one that is seen becomes the very eye: such is the work of a heart that keeps no count.

‘Becomes the eye’: all one sees, and everything is seen through it. Tamil ‘eye’ also means one’s dearest. ‘Count’: both number and weighing.

  2. 1122.

    Struck by a look

nokkinen nokkinaal nokkarindaal nenjamelaamthaakkinaal theendaa thaval

I looked; she looked back; she knew my look; she struck my whole heart, and never touched me.

  3. 1123.

    Mistaking response for possession

kayirilaa aazhkinatrul kallerindaan osaivarave udaimaiyen raan

He threw a stone into a deep well that had no rope, and as soon as the sound came back up, he claimed the well as his own.

With no rope, nothing can be drawn up; only the stone’s sound comes back.

  4. 1124.

    Beauty through love

kaadhalar kannir karungaakkai annamaamkaadhali laarkadkus sol

In the eyes of those who love, a black crow is a swan; to those without love, it is only a saying.

The last Tamil word, sol, can also mean “tell it”: tell this to those without love.

  5. 1125.

    Attraction comes unasked

puzhudhikkul neervaarkkap pulmulaikkum vaarkkaathezhuvadhe kaadhal mulai

Pour water into the dust and grass sprouts; pour none, and the sprout that comes up is love’s.

  6. 1126.

    Seeing through an image

nenjil padhindamukam neril varumukathaianjaamal moodum thirai

The face pressed into the heart is a curtain that falls boldly over the face that comes in person.

  7. 1127.

    One mind, no words

kandaa riruvar karuthondre sollilarkondaar koduthaar vizhi

Two saw each other: one thought between them, no word spoken; their eyes took, and gave.

  8. 1128.

    Eyes ahead of restraint

nenjai adakkiyum nirkaadha ondrundunenjukku mundiya kan

Hold the heart in check, and still one thing does not stop: the eye, gone on ahead of the heart.

  9. 1129.

    Equal in wanting

nokkinaal nokkedhirkon daange irudhattudhthookkum niraikol nilai

She looked, and look met look: at once, the two pans of a scale held up on a single beam.

  10. 1130.

    Drawn without understanding

neyvilakkin soottil vizhumvittil ennariyumkaiyariyaa eerppin kadhai

What does a moth know as it falls into the heat of a ghee lamp? Its fall is the story of a pull the hand does not know.

In Tamil, the hand knows a thing by holding and handling it; no hand has ever held this pull.
