Chapter 112அதிகாரம் 112 அழகு Beauty
What beauty is and does.
1111. Looking beyond decoration
oppanaiyai naaduvaar oppariyaar opparindaaroppanaiyai naadaa thavar
Those who seek adornment do not know what fits; those who know what fits do not seek adornment.
In Tamil the word for adornment grows from the word for ‘match’ or ‘likeness’: to adorn is to make something match.
1112. Beauty beyond use
unnaadha poovukkum undu malaraadsikannukku veror pasi
Even an uneaten flower has its reign in bloom. The eye has a hunger of another kind.
The Tamil word for ‘eat’ also covers a bee drinking nectar, so the flower may be one nothing has taken from at all.
1113. Beauty without training
nelkuthum pennin midaru vidumosaiyaarum payitraa isai
The sound that comes from the throat of a woman pounding paddy is music no one ever taught.
Paddy is rice still in its husk; women pounded it with a heavy pestle to free the grain.
1114. Beauty in wear
sedhukkiya kallir sirandadhukaan kaalamudhaithudhaidh theynda padi
See how the step that time has kicked and kicked is worn finer than chiselled stone.
1115. Knowing a face
manarkeni polum mukame pazhakappazhakadh theliyum azhaku
As a well dug in sand clears the more it is drawn from, so the beauty of a face clears the more one comes to know it.
In a well dug in sand the first water comes up cloudy; drawn again and again, clearer water seeps in.
1116. Beauty as experienced
theenjuvai thaandran kanikkudh theriyaadhuvaayppavar naavin misai
A fruit does not know its own sweetness; the sweetness is on the tongue of those who taste it.
1117. Rest from pain
perumbun marakkum sirupoovin meleorukanam nirkum uyir
Life forgets a great wound and stays a moment on a small flower.
1118. Beauty in passing
nindruvidum neerin niramandru kaalvaayilsendruvidum neerin azhaku
Not the colour of still water: the beauty of water running on down a channel.
1119. What lasts must be learned
azhipavai kaanpadharke yandro vizhikalozhiyaa thiruppavai kal
What are eyes for, if not to see what perishes? Learn what does not perish.
Kal, ‘learn!’, also means ‘stone’, the figure for what stays as it is.
1120. Beauty that stays
kandaar marakkum azhakandru kanmoodinindraalum neengaa azhaku
Not the beauty that is seen and forgotten: the beauty that will not leave though one stands with eyes shut.
